A public rally was held here today, led by the All Jaintia Commercial Vehicles Association (AJCVA), to demand severe punishment for the culprits involved in the gruesome murder of two tourist taxi drivers recently.
Pressure groups from Jaiñtia Hills, the Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong Jowai and others carried out the rally, which began near Iawmusiang and concluded at Kiang Nangbah Government College.
President of the AJCVA, Paila Kordor Lyngkot, urged the authorities to keep the suspects locked up without bail and bring down the death penalty or at least life imprisonment over their inhumane acts.
Damehipaia Papeng went missing on August 10 and his body was later dumped near a cattle market in Mukoi Mihmyntdu near the Jowai Bypass. His throat has been slit. Police arrested four suspects in the case, with I Love You Talang detained on August 24. According to police, Talang confessed that he and three accomplices were involved in the kidnapping and murder of the taxi driver.
The others who were arrested for the crime are Tell Me Pyrtuh, Ramesh Dkhar and Sampher Ksoo.
Police are trying to ascertain if the group was also involved in the murder of another taxi driver, Fullmoon Kharsahnoh, whose body was found at Mynkre in East Jaiñtia Hills last week. The miscreants tied both his hands and feet and slit his throat. Kharsahnoh and his tourist taxi went missing on August 16.
