The state government has received the sanction for release of ad hoc installment and the first installment of the Centre’s share amounting to Rs 272 crore for teachers.
This was told to a delegation of SSA teachers, who held a second meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong here yesterday. The two sides discussed issues pertaining to the welfare of the SSA teachers in Meghalaya as a follow-up to a similar meeting on July 21. The issues are clearance of pending salaries, implementation of the ‘quarterly system’ for payment of SSA teacher wages and enhancement of pay.
Now that the central share has been paid, the Meghalaya government is in the process of meeting its share of Rs 30.26 crore along with additional funding requirements.
For the implementation of the quarterly system for payment of SSA teachers’ salaries, the Deputy CM told the delegation that the Education, Planning and Finance Departments are working to bring about a system to enable this. However, the state government will have to increase its corpus fund in order to be able to cater for it.
On the subject of higher pay, Tynsong said that the issue will be addressed by the State Education Commission once it is constituted by the state government, which should happen soon.
