At least two leaders of the UDP will not get party ticket to contest the 2023 Assembly elections.
The two are party’s senior vice president Bindo Lanong and Umsning circle president Donkupar Sumer.
Lanong has sought the party’s ticket to contest from Nongkrem. However, the party is likely to allot the ticket to independent MLA Lambor Malngiang.
Lanong has expressed his displeasure with the party leadership over the issue of ticket from Nongkrem.
He also said that Malngiang had not joined the UDP and had shifted political loyalties frequently in the past.
The former deputy chief minister has been with the UDP since its inception in 1997. The veteran regional party leader was also a member of the erstwhile APHLC since the 1970s which later became HPU in 1994.
However, UDP leaders said that Malngiang has a better chance to win from Nongkrem compared to Lanong.
As far as Umsning constituency is concerned, the party has unofficially decided to deny ticket to Umsning circle president Donkupar Sumer.
Sources in the party said that Sunshine Makri would be given a ticket to contest from Umsning.
Makri is the son of former Khliehriat MLA Nehlang Lyngdoh.
Yesterday, Makri along with a large number of his supporters joined the UDP in the presence of party president and Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh.
Sumer, who is the former MDC of the party from Umsning has not revealed his future plans and is consulting his supporters before taking a final decision whether to leave the party.
