Deputy Chief Minister and National People’s Party vice-president Prestone Tynsong has said that the NPP has almost finalised its candidates for the next state elections, which have to be held by March 2023.
He reiterated that his National People’s Party will not form a pre-poll alliance with anyone for the next state elections, which are scheduled to be held by March 2023, not even with current allies in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
The NPP has seen a wave of support in terms of political hopefuls and heavyweights but Tynsong said that there will be no confusion in the award of tickets as the party high command has more or less picked the candidates.
“Unlike the other political parties, who prolong the process until elections are close by, the NPP will not allow any kind of confusion,” Tynsong said today. “Once it has identified the winning candidates, they will be told to work hard as they will be given the party ticket.”
Not necessarily all the sitting MLAs will receive NPP tickets. Instead the party will assess their chances of winning before taking the decision.
Meanwhile, Tynsong continued his fondness for giving advice to opposition parties, saying that the Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party should form an alliance to have any chance of surviving in Meghalaya.
When asked about the Congress Party, which he belonged to pre-2018 and which Tynsong earlier claimed was a sinking ship, he said that the Congress at present does not even have a single MLA but he leaves it to the party to take a decision on the election.
“Unlike the TMC that just came yesterday, the Congress has been here for several decades and has the party organisation in every constituency but winning the election is a different issue, no matter if you are the oldest or the newest,” he stated, while adding that the success of independent candidates demonstrates that Meghalayans do not vote based on party affiliation but on the individual.
