Colleges and universities took to celebrating the 75th anniversary of Independence with full fervour yesterday, with numerous programmes organised around the state.
Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) hoisted the tricolour on campus, among other activities throughout the week.
During the week leading up to August 15, the Student Council organised activities such as poetry writing and essay competitions in which Ridashisha Sohshang from the School of Economics, Commerce and Management, and Riphishonstar Pyngrope of the Department of Allied Health Science MIIT were declared as winners respectively.
Yesterday, the Independence Day celebrations began with a marathon in which 27 people, including staff and students, registered.
The programme started off with a flag hoisting ceremony by Vice-Chancellor TK Kharbamon followed by a programme that included performance of traditional dances and songs.
At Shillong Commerce College, celebrations began with the Independence Day Run on August 6 and culminated with the Independence Day Rally and a formal programme yesterday. Other events that were organised included phawar, essay, painting, drawing, poetry, singing, skit and fancy dress competitions.
The rally was organised by the NSS unit of the college and took in Don Bosco Square, Dhankheti, Malki Point and Barik Point before returning to the college via the Secretariat and Governor’s House. There were 120 students and 17 teachers who participated in the Tiranga Yatra. This was followed by the flag hoisting by the college principal.
The flag was also hoisted at William Carey University at its programme to celebrate Independence Day.
Meanwhile, the Central Puja Committee celebrated Independence Day at the Immersion Ghat in Polo. The ghat was decorated with the national flag, which was hoisted by CPC president Naba Bhattacharjee followed by the performance of a patriotic song.
The Laban Sanathan Dharmasabha Harishava also organised events to mark Independence Day, namely a mini marathon that also marked 125 years of the Durga Puja celebration. There were 93 participants, ranging in age from 15 to 70. A women’s cricket tournament was also inaugurated on the same day, with three teams taking part.
