TMC leader, George B Lyngdoh today said that his party has taken a “historic” step to air the voices of the people of the state for inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
He said it was not a news demand but it is for the first time that a national party has taken up the matter outside and inside the Parliament.
Lyngdoh recalled that the State government from 2005 have recognised both the languages as associated languages of the state. “A lot of work has been done especially from literature society and eminent writes, so the demand has come from the people and it is a sensitive issue and close to the hearts of the people,” he added.
The TMC leader felt that it is important for the state to keeping pushing with the Government of India on pertinent issues of the state. “Just by keeping quiet with expectations is not becoming of a democracy” Lyngdoh said.
