Meghalaya till date has only 49 electric vehicles despite the State having a dedicated electric vehicle policy that targets 15 per cent electric vehicle penetration by 2025.

According to data, the total number of non-electric vehicles in the State is 4,59,001.

The total number of vehicles in the State (both electric and non-electric) is 4,59,050.

Under Phase-II of FAME India Scheme, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has sanctioned 2877 electric vehicle charging stations in 68 cities across 25 states and union territories. As of July 1, 50 charging stations have been installed in the country.

As far as Meghalaya is concerned, the number of electric vehicle charging stations sanctioned is 40. The State has three retail outlets where electric vehicle charging facilities are available.

Meghalaya plans to have around 20,000 electric vehicles within a five-year period. Under the Meghalaya electric vehicle policy, the State government will provide incentives to a limited number of early electric vehicle adopters.

The Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy 2021 came into effect from April 1, 2021, and will be operational for the next five years.

According to the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy, the government will offer a purchase subsidy of Rs10,000 per KWH for the first 3,500 electric two-wheelers, Rs 4,000 per KWH for the first 200 electric three-wheelers, 2,500 electric four-wheelers, and 30 electric buses that will be purchased and registered in the State during the policy period.

The State government has also decided to waive only the registration fees for all types of electric vehicles purchased during the period of Meghalaya Electric Vehicles Policy 2021.

Further, electric vehicles that fall under the provisions of the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy will enjoy four years of exemption from road tax. Such vehicles will be exempted from road tax till March 31, 2026.
