A coal miners family attacked Rida Dkhar, a farmer in Moolang village in East Jaiñtia Hills, who had demanded to be compensated for the damage to her paddy fields by the neighbouring coal miners male family members.
An FIR by her said that she was washing clothes near her residence when she was physically assaulted by Michel Siangshai and Ngiat Dkhar, the son and husband respectively of the coal miner Riyo Siangshai. She said she escaped being killed as her screams for help were heard by her husband and sons who rescued her this morning.
She rushed to Lad Rymbai police outpost to file an FIR against them. Sources said that some police personnel at first dilly dallied and told her they would have to call her the people who attacked her to the police outpost. But on arrival of a pastor they were acquainted with the FIR was registered by the Officer in Charge of the Outpost
Her safety now is entirely in the hands of the State which has the dubious fame of attacks against people who speak against coal mining.
Dkhar had earlier spoken to Highland Post to air her grievances of her paddy field affected by coal mining.
A recording to the death threats made by the coal miners last night is also available with Highland Post.
