The report into the killing of ex-militant Cherishterfield Thangkhiew by police is still being studied by the state government and will be shared with the public only after the process is complete, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed today.
It was last year, on August 13, that Thangkhiew was shot dead by police during a raid of his residence in the early hours of the morning. Police claimed that the former militant had attacked them with a knife. The authorities raided his house as he was a suspect in the improvised explosive device blast, a few days prior, in Laitumkhrah. His death led to widespread unrest in Shillong that was only brought under control when the government promised an independent inquiry.
The Justice Vaiphei report was handed over to the government on May 20.
As it is a “very lengthy” report, the government is taking time in studying it, the CM said after a meeting with Superintendents of Police and commanding officers here today.
“At the appropriate time we will be informing everybody about the outcome of the inquiry report that was given to us,” Sangma added.
Today’s conference also dwelt on the issue of militancy and other law and order aspects. By and large, the state is free of underground militant activity, Sangma stated.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police LR Bishnoi informed that there have been no complaints received at headquarters regarding human rights violations carried out by police.
Briefing media persons, the DGP said that any complaint would be immediately addressed at the highest levels.
“We have already issued directions from headquarters that human rights should be respected at every level, whether it is at thana level, subdivision or district level. If any violation comes to our notice it will be dealt with at the earliest,” Bishnoi said.
