Jaiñtia Students’ Union (JSU) president Jersom Shylla has urged all pressure groups in the State to also shift their focus to the threat posed by climate change and environmental degradation.
Speaking at the oath taking ceremony of the new central executive committee of FKJGP held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium here today, Shylla said that climate change is a reality that needs immediate attention so that the issue can be addressed through concerted efforts.
“I would sincerely request all pressure groups to focus on the threat posed by climate change. Our State is feeling the impact of climate change every year,” Shylla said.
He also drew the attention of the audience to the problems caused by environmental degradation and indiscriminate felling of trees.
“We are losing trees at a faster rate. Besides that, careless mining has caused a lot of destruction to nature. For example, in East Jaiñtia Hills many coal mining areas were once famous for oranges. Since the coal mining started, there were no more oranges in those areas,” the JSU chief said.
