Even as the State government has reasoned shortage of 110 megawatts of power as cause for the load shedding, unrepaired damages in Myntdu-Leshka Hydro Electric Project (MLHEP) has crippled power generation.
Sources said that damage of the Generator Stage IV Power Station of 30 MW in 2019 and Generator Stage III Power Station (30 MW) damaged in 2021, were left unrepaired.
This month, MLHEP suffered major power generation loss after its third unit generating 42 megawatt (MW) burnt down, which was reported by Highland Post on June 13. MLHEP is now functioning on only 2 X 42 MW totalling 84 MW.
Sources said these damages have resulted in the loss of 102 MW of power, particularly when monsoon time is the peak generating season.
In terms of finance, the total loss would not be less than Rs 60 crore for the three years, technical sources in the know of the machines said, adding, if the repair costs to around Rs 3 crore it the loss would be ten times due to power generation loss.
Meanwhile, sources also informed that a machine at Umtru Power Station that generates 20 MW broke down recently.
