People in South Garo Hills have been severely affected by flood, especially along the Indo-Bangladesh border due to recent heavy rains.
Large areas in the district remain cut off and there have been multiple landslides and areas including Maheskola and Siju remain without any road link.
Six bridges, including wooden and suspension bridges, have been washed away with electricity and the network heavily disrupted.
Today, leader of opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma visited Rongara-Siju village and extended relief to flood affected residents.
Dr. Sangma assured continuous support to households ravaged by flood.
In a statement, the Trinamool Congress said Sangma’s visit marks the party’s unfaltering support towards the flood victims, and denotes its pledge to work for the people rain or shine.
State Trinamool Congress vice president and Rangsakona legislator Zenith M. Sangma yesterday distributed flood relief materials in the form of food grain to around 900 families in eleven villages under Rangsakona constituency.
Accompanied by the youth members of the party, Zenith distributed rice and lentils to the affected families.
In continuation of the relief efforts, the Meghalaya Trinamool Congress joint secretary Manik Das along with other leaders visited Ulubari village in Mahendraganj of South West Garo Hills and distributed food grains and other necessary items to the villagers.
TMC MDC of Balachanda constituency Agassi Marak today visited the flood affected areas of Namabilla and Haripur in Selsella constituency of West Garo Hills and gifted a boat to the flood hit villagers.
Yesterday, Marak visited the flood affected areas of Songkapara in the same constituency and provided necessary relief materials to the villagers.
The MDC used boats to reach inaccessible villages that are cut off from the mainland and assessed the damage caused by incessant rains in various areas.
More than six lakh people have been impacted by the recent bad weather conditions and flash floods in the State.
In addition, the weather related calamity damaged 940 villages, 4384 homes and 12 to 15 hectares of crops across the State.
The Garo Hills region has been severely hit by unprecedented floods and landslides.
Numerous incidents of landslides have been reported from the Garo region.
