The NPP has decided not to give ticket to one of its 23 MLAs to contest the 2023 Assembly elections.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has made it clear that sitting NPP MLA from Raksamgre constituency Benedic R. Marak will not be given the party ticket to contest the 2023 polls.
Sangma yesterday addressed party workers and supporters of NPP at the residence of former MLA, Limison D. Sangma at Boldampitbari village and announced that Limison would be the party candidate for the 2023 polls from Raksamgre.
The chief minister who is also the national president of NPP alleged that Marak tried to break the MDA government with the help of the opposition.
Sangma also said that NPP would soon suspend Marak from party membership and also file a complaint with the Assembly Speaker seeking Marak’s disqualification as an MLA under the anti defection law.
It may be mentioned that Marak is both the MLA and MDC from Raksamgre.
The NPP leadership was unhappy with Marak after he disobeyed the party’s direction to step down from the post of Chief Executive Member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) in January this year.
Marak took the support of the opposition Trinamool Congress MDCs to stay in power.
After he refused to resign from the CEM post, the NPP had to move a no-confidence motion against him.
Marak lost the no-confidence vote and was ousted from the CEM position. He was replaced by NPP MDC Rakesh A. Sangma and later by Albinush Marak.
It now looks like Marak is likely to join the Trinamool Congress in order to contest the 2023 elections.
Yesterday, the Trinamool Congress formed its block committee in Gambegre constituency.
The block committee was formed yesterday in the presence of party MDCs – Agassi R. Marak, Rinaldo K. Sangma, Nehru D. Sangma, Sadhiarani M. Sangma, Sanjay Koch, West Garo Hills convener Richard M. Marak and party leader Littin Ch Marak.
