Six functionaries of Gizang Salbari village including the headman were arrested by Assam police for taking action against one person who applied for land documents from Assam.
Gizang Salbari is a border village under Hima Nonglang of West Khasi Hills.
According to reports reaching here, the arrested included village headman Kribin Sangma, deputy headman Demarson Marak, village secretary Pairosh Marak and three executive members – Brejion Sangma, Raisend Marak and Gilseng Shira.
They were arrested by Assam police from Boko police station after they summoned and fined one Becline G. Sangma for allegedly applying for land documents from Assam.
The arrested persons said that since the village falls under Meghalaya, therefore the action by Becline Sangma in applying for land documents from Assam was illegal.
Irked by the action of the headman and the village functionaries, Becline Sangma lodged a complaint with Assam police at Boko police station and accused the villagers of Gizang Salbari of cutting down his betel nut plantation and damaging his house.
Following this, the Assam police summoned the six village functionaries to the Boko police station on June 5. They were formally arrested yesterday and sent to Guwahati jail.
It was also informed that the complainant Becline Sangma is a teacher at Umshiak Upper Primary School.
Meanwhile, the HYC West Khasi Hills district unit along with villagers of Gizang Salbari today sent a letter to the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills seeking his intervention to get the six persons released from Assam police custody.
