The All Meghalaya Poultry Suppliers and Retailers Association has decided to raise the price of chicken in the state from June 1.
Announcing the decision here today, association president Wanshailang Kharshandi said that the new price of 1 kg of live chicken will cost Rs 220 while dressed chicken will now cost Rs 320 per kg.
He stated that association had agreed on the new price of chicken after taking into consideration the overall impact that it would have on all consumers, buyers and retailers.
Kharshandi said that their decision to hike the price of chicken was due to the loss incurred during the past few months. He stated that the wholesale price of poultry stood between Rs 180-185 a kg and selling the same to consumers as per the old rate of Rs 250 would incur further loss to retailers.
He further informed that a new registration for all suppliers and retailers of poultry will now take place in a bid format to curb the dominance of non-tribal poultry suppliers over local suppliers, which according to the association their business has been curtailed to the maximum.
