The United Democratic Party (UDP), an ally in the NPP-led MDA government is the only party that has taken the initiative to file a petition in the court against the border agreement entered between Meghalaya and Assam.
This was stated by newly elected UDP Shillong city youth wing president, Manbhalang Syiemlieh after a meeting held here today.
“UDP is not silent on this issue. You will see our seriousness in this because the KHADC CEM will move forward against the border agreement in court,” he said.
Earlier, the chief minister had stated none of the coalition partners in his government suggested review of the border agreement entered with Assam during the coordination committee of the ruling MDA coalition.
Asked if the UDP would pull out from the MDA coalition, Syimelieh said that it is up to the party leaders. He said there are numerous issues which the party does not agree with the government. “Being in the government does not mean that whatever the government decides or NPP decides the UDP will go along with that there’s been times where UDP are against such decisions so I believe that in the next election 2023 we will go separately and we will address so many issues and we will also voice out our objectives for the state,” he said.
He exuded confidence that Meghalaya will see changes in 2023 as the UDP will lead the government then. “The UPD will lead the government. It will not be just following or be part of the government. The UPD will lead,” he added.
Syiemlieh further spoke on introduction of on-camera interviews to restore faiths in recruitments by the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and the District Selection Committee. He also suggested introduction of vocational programmes and workshops for development of employment skills to address unemployment.
Syiemlieh further urged the government to establish a state university in line with the ones in other Northeastern states to cater to students who want to pursue higher education in the State.
