Problems faced by trainees at NSTI Tura

A trainee (Name withheld on request)

      Editor,

I request you to publish my complaint in your esteemed newspaper regarding the problems faced by the trainees of the centrally run training institution – National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Tura so that the concerned authority will look into the matter seriously and address the same.

I am a trainee at NSTI (W), Tura which is a training institution for women to get trained in different vocational fields like tailoring, computer, soil technician, secretarial practices etc. Out of 33 NSTIs in the country there are only two in North East India of which one is in Tura, Meghalaya.

But I am very much upset that the authority has not looked into the shortcomings in the NSTI (W), Tura.

We the trainees are facing problems due to the poor facilities in this training institution. A batch of 20 trainees have to share three to four tailoring machines and computers on a rotation basis and wait an hour for our practical turns. Trainees have to purchase their own learning materials like clothes, threads, pins and other practical materials.

How are we supposed to get skilled when there are no tools and equipment supplied to us? A trainee has to share four computers with 20 trainees? A beautician trainee has to purchase all the practical materials from his own pockets? How should we get ourselves trained? Should we get enrolled just for certificates? How do we get trained when our parents can’t afford the training expenses? The hostel provided for us has no cook. We have to cook our own food and do groceries. We had to bring our own cooking stoves and wok for cooking. Lastly, a trainee from Uttar Pradesh was very sick for more than a week. She could not even stand on her feet but still the hostel in-charge never bothered to visit her.

Even when she had informed the hostel warden about her condition they never took her to hospital for medical check-up. They didn’t even inform her parents regarding her conditions. Later, her brother had to come all the way from Uttar Pradesh to get her medical check up and take her home.

So, my question is – Are all the authorities of NSTI (W), Tura deaf and dumb? Why are NSTI trainees not eligible for scholarships? We opted for skill training because our parents couldn’t afford to send us for higher education. Here in NSTI (W), Tura we see the opposite.
