World Health Day was observed in Meghalaya today.
In Shillong, the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) saw its students organise a flash mob dance at Khyndailad to generate awareness on the health of individuals as well as the planet.
One-to-one interviews among the students of St Anthony’s College and Shillong College to understand the perception of college students towards health and the environment were also conducted followed by a group interaction among individuals attending the Out Patient Department at Ganesh Das Hospital to spread awareness on preventive health practices and environment health.
The theme this year was ‘Our planet or health’. The staff and students of the third batch of the Master’s in Public Health and first batch of the bachelor’s programme organised the dance.
In Ri-Bhoi, Umeit Secondary School held an awareness programme on quality living and the importance of health.
The event was attended by D Kharbani, the school principal, office bearers of the school managing committee along with students and parents.
The celebration’s objective was to develop a deep understanding of the essential link between the individual and collective health for a sustainable life.
As part of the programme was an initiative to bring students closer to nature, the ‘School Nursery Yojana’. The project seeks to engage Classes 6 to 9 students in raising saplings in nurseries created in schools.
The school was presented with a sapling and a packet of seeds for students to plant in their school.
“We have high hopes that, in the next few years, we can grow organic vegetables in our own garden and I want to encourage others also to create kitchen gardens in their homes,’’ one of the resource people, Kynshew Dapsuk Kharkrang, said.
Urging every student to each plant a tree, Kharkrang said that every school must earmark space to prepare a small nursery where the saplings can be planted.
