After much speculation as to his loyalties, Rambrai Jyrngam MDC Bajop Pyngrope has decided to quit the Congress and join the National People’s Party (NPP).
The former Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee secretary tendered his resignation along with others from the local block Congress committee.
As there is no anti-defection law applicable to the autonomous district councils, Pyngrope, who has been with the party for eight years, is free to jump ship midway through the current council’s lifetime.
Speaking to the press, Pyngrope said that corruption at the highest levels of the Congress has forced him to step away from the party.
The NPP has hoovered up most of the defecting Congress members (apart from those that broke away to launch the Trinamool Congress in Meghalaya) and Pyngrope is yet another politician who has been drawn towards the ruling party.
He said that the positive leadership of NPP president and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has led him to join the party and he has seen results during the CM’s tenure, such as moves to resolve the longstanding border dispute with Assam; Pyngrope’s constituency contains one such disputed border area.
