The Garo Students Union’s Western Zone (West) appears to be in a state of disorder, with the general secretary of the zone issuing a press release questioning the legality of certain claims to leadership within the pressure group.
Tengroang Marak said that the GSU’s North Daddenggre unit was dissolved after its president, Rupa Marak, contested the state elections in 2018 without resigning from his post.
With it dissolved, he questioned how one Tengsan Marak can claim to be the president of the Western Zone (North) and call for an lection to the Phulbari regional unit.
“Who has approved him as a president of Western Zone (North) without the consent of the regional units and with the Central Executive Committee?” Tengroang asked. “If the Phulbari unit needs to conduct an election then Western Zone (West) and CEC will decide and will approve the election commission. Hence claiming to be the president and appointing the election commission without concerning the GSU Western Zone (West), CEC and the general public is strongly condemnable in the eyes of the law.”
Tengsan, he added, wants to conduct the election for his own “self-benefit and political interest” and his moves to form an election committee on his own will create “bad blood” with the GSU.
