The Hills State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has called on the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to formulate laws for protection of rivers under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
In a letter to the KHADC CEM today, HSPDP general secretary Panborlang L Ryntathiang mentioned about pollution of Umkhen and Umkhrah rivers and said the district council should address these issues as empowered.
He said without doubt these rivers are the dirtiest and heavily polluted and expressed concern that rivers and riverbanks in the rural areas will one day meet the same fate and water will no longer be fit for human consumption and agricultural purposes.
Ryntathiang also pointed out the menace of construction in these rivers wherein toilets are constructed near the river banks and urged the district council to act immediately to safeguard the live of these rivers.
