Newly-elected president of the United Democratic Party’s youth wing, Kyrmen Shylla, today stressed that it is high time that regional parties lead Meghalaya for the benefit of the people of the state.
“We have the highest number of elected youth leaders and members in the legislative assembly and the UDP youth wing will work even harder to bring in more youth leaders and we believe we will lead the state in 2023,” the cabinet minister told reporters.
He expressed confidence that the UDP will be able to increase the number of seats it holds when the elections come round next year, with special focus to be put on Garo Hills where the party has no representatives.
When asked about defection of members to national parties, Shylla maintained that endurance reaps the sweetest fruit and the UDP members are dedicated to the party.
“We are also trying to bring back all those who have distanced themselves from the party and we will make them understand the importance of staying with the regional forces, especially the UDP, so that we secure the highest numbers and be able to protect all the interests of the indigenous population of the state,” he said.
On March 7 the UDP youth wing will hold a meeting and will take a resolution on various important issues and agendas, like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and unemployment.
“The UDP has done much for the state and much is left to be done and it needs the support of the youth to lead the state and bring overall development. We also don’t want the UDP youth wing to exist only in name but in work,” Shylla said, adding that the youth wing at the grassroots are encouraged to identify eligible candidates and put their names forward for the 2023 polls.
