Concerned by allegations that factories in and around Byrnihat are emitting pollution into the surrounding neighbourhood, Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun and MDC Victor Rani inspected two plants in the area today to understand the ground reality.
The two factories belonged to Pawan Casting and CMJ Breweries, both of which are located in the vicinity around Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi.
Locals have claimed that the two release toxic black smoke into the air and wastes directly into the local river used for bathing and washing clothes.
Additional Deputy Commissioner R Kharbihkhiew, Senior Environmental Engineer in the State Pollution Control Board W Kharkrang and traditional leaders were also present.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Sohtun said that regular inspections will take place and he urged the departments concerned to be vigilant on pollution and take legal action when required.
