World Cancer Day was observed at Pomlum Primary Health Centre today by the office of the District Medical and Health Officer and State Cancer Society.
Additional Director of Health Services, Dr SS Nongbri, was the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nongbri stated that the main aim of World Cancer Day is to give awareness and education about cancer to the general public as cancer is preventable with early detection and treatment.
He also added that cancer is the fifth leading cause of death in Meghalaya and with the rise of cancer cases in the state he stressed that people should change their habits for the better in order to minimise their risk of contracting the disease.
Other speeches were delivered by dental surgeon Dr Z Tariang on oral cancer and Shillong Civil Hospital’s Dr A Mawlong on other forms of cancer.
A short skit on the theme of World Cancer Day 2022 – ‘Close the Care Gap’ – was presented by the students of NEIGRIHMS’s College of Nursing.
