Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will meet his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma again tomorrow in Guwahati to iron out a few issues related to the proposed border agreement between the two states in six areas of differences.
Sangma today chaired a cabinet meeting and updated the cabinet on the boundary issue and the solution proposed by the two states through swapping of land.
“We will be meeting the Assam chief minister tomorrow evening at about 4:30 pm – 5 pm in Guwahati,” Sangma told media persons here today.
He also said that both sides are hopeful that once the meeting is over they will be able to come to a final conclusion on these first six locations.
So far, the two states have come to 98 per cent agreement on the six areas of differences and tomorrow’s meeting between Sangma and Sarma is to reach a final conclusion on the remaining two per cent before their joint meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi later next month.
Out of twelve disputed locations, the two states have decided to resolve the dispute in six locations in the first phase.
The six locations are Tarabari, Gizang, Hahim, Baklapara, Khanapara (Pilingkata) and Ratacherra. These areas fall under Cachar, Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan districts of Assam and West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya.
There are 36 villages that fall in these six locations that cover an area of 36.79 sq km.
Sangma and Sarma had met Union home minister Amit Shah on January 20. The two chief ministers also submitted their recommendations to resolve the decades-long boundary dispute in the six locations.
