Despite continuous reports and allegations of illegal coal mining and transportation within Meghalaya, especially in Garo Hills, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma continued to maintain that his government is doing all it can in combatting the menace.
Civil society groups, pressure groups and leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma have all recently claimed that rampant illegal mining and transportation of coal is going on, especially in South Garo Hills.
Pressed on this matter today, Conrad said, “We have given strict instructions to Deputy Commissioners and the police that no illegal coal mining activities must take place and only people and trucks with proper legal documents can be allowed through and that is what is being followed.”
