Indian Oil has decided to set up Meghalaya’s first LPG bottling plant in Umiam.
The move could help eliminate cooking gas shortages as well as provide a boost to the local economy through investment in the plant and creation of jobs.
The project has been approved by the Indian Oil top brass, a source informed, and tenders will now be invited within the next three months. The aim is to complete the plant, which will have a capacity of 30 tonnes per annum, in two years’ time.
The gas will not be piped to the plant but transported in pressurised tankers and then bottled in cylinders at Umiam for distribution within Meghalaya.
Presently, the LPG cylinders in Meghalaya are brought from Assam. Since Meghalaya does not have a bottling plant, it often leads to the scarcity of LPG cylinders.
