Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today credited development works of his government for the victory of NPP and its coalition partner, UDP.
Upbeat by its grand victory over the Congress as NPP won two of the three seats, Sangma said his party did not speak much in the election campaign but liked to work and play “politics of development.”
He said the MDA government has concentrated on development and it is for this reason that the people have given a clear thumbs up in the by-polls.
Sangma, who is also the national president of the NPP, said that the by-elections was a tough one as the seats in Rajabala and Mawryngkneng have been traditionally won by the Congress.
He said in 2013, the NPP could manage with just 450 votes in Rajabala and climbed up to 4800 in 2018. This by-election the party crossed 11823 votes. “This is a jump of 7000 votes (from 2018) which is a huge jump. What I am trying to indicate is the fight has been tough and yet the people have put their trust in us, it is because of the agendas and the work of this government that the people have seen,” Sangma added.
Sangma claimed that the Congress especially in Rajabala was divided into two groups. He pointed out that the youth leaders of the Congress were working for the UDP candidate – Ashahel D. Shira in the hills areas of Rajabala.
“It is a bad result for them (Congress),” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that the opposition Congress indulged in “childish allegations” during the campaign for the bye-elections. He said the NPP and UDP victory is an indication that people are smarter than the Congress.
He reiterated that the Congress was a ‘sinking ship’ and said, “Its leaders should jump off or one may die half way.”
