Phoebe Dale Nongrum, Meghalaya’s first women Formula 4 drivers and the first from the Northeast is gearing up for an assessment test to qualify for Formula Woman and join the community of women from around the world.
Nongrum is among the three women from the country who will go through the assessment at Erda’s Speedway in Vadodara, India in November.
Phoebe was referred by Auto Guru, a content and marketing consultant, which officially partnered with Formula Woman UK for the next five years to create a platform for women drivers from India.
“I couldn’t believe my ears. I would say hard work pays off,” an excited Phoebe told Highland Post. She started her preparations from August and hopes to “make it all the way” to the top at par with other formula women internationally.
“I have been preparing myself, training every day working on my body building a correct racing athlete body, building my stamina, strength,” she said.
During the assessment period, Phoebe will be assessed over five parameters i.e., driving, go karting, physical fitness, media, and written test.
If found fit, Phoebe along with two other three winners from India will further progress to the UK leg where they will compete with 47 other women from across the 28 participating countries.
Over rounds of eliminations, 12 Women will go through the TV shoot out episode to be held in February/March 2022 in UK/Europe. Over further assessments six winners will get a dream chance to compete in the McLaren GT Cup Championship in England.
Formula Woman was a race series that launched in the UK way back in 2003/04, with the intention of getting more female drivers into a male-dominated sport. It aims at creating an inclusive community for women in motorsport. With the emphasis in recent years of women in sport, diversity and female empowerment the time is right to with natural driving talent, personality and ability to take on what has been in the past a traditionally male dominated sport.
