Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president and Shillong MP, Vincent Pala, today alleged that the National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP) who partners in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, use the many check gates and toll gates in the state as means to collect money for themselves.
“All those Covid camps that used to check people entering our state have now become like the ATMs of the UDP and NPP,” Pala claimed. “If you go from Shillong to Jowai, you will see lots of small gates, police check gates, forest check gates. All those are ATMs for them to spend during elections.”
It is plain to see that the situation in Meghalaya now is incomparably worse than it was when the Congress was in charge, he added.
Citing law and order, the MPCC chief said that when the Congress was in power, they were doing well and “everything was under control”.
“But today lawlessness is everywhere. In terms of corruption, these people (NPP and UDP) used to say that Congress is corrupt, but not a single scandal was there when we were in power,” Pala added.
The MPCC president also said that the hike in prices of fuel will have a bad impact for people, especially in tribal areas because the main mode of communication in Meghalaya is via roads.
“Once this fuel increases, the impact is on the common man. Inflation will be high, the economy in rural areas will be badly affected and it will definitely have a major impact,” the MP added.
