The Thma U Rangli-Juki (TUR) has put forth six demands for the government to act on the increasing rise of petrol in the State, which has also led to the increase in price of essentials.
The demands include, to strengthen public transport in Shillong and its surrounding areas, and also to increase taxation for big expensive private vehicles such as SUVs.
While asking the government to control the price of essentials in the State, TUR said that the government should also reduce the price of fuel substantially by reducing the relevant state levied taxes.
It also sought increase in the base minimum wages of the state for daily waged workers to a level that it could be termed, “living wages.”
Demanding the government to stop unnecessary expenditure in spending as well as to stop the practice of appointing superfluous and useless political appointees the organisation also said that the
government should stop its plan of reimbursing the income tax of non-tribal IAS officers serving in the state from the state coffers.
Terming the increase in fuel prices as “obscene” TUR also expressed its concern and said, “The rise in the price of fuel has a domino effect in the price of taxi and bus fare and food and amenities. This is affecting small vendors and businesses, hawkers and street vendors, domestic workers, daily wage workers and those working in low salaried jobs.”
TUR has also condemned the Union Government, led by the BJP, as well as the state government of Meghalaya for failing to control price rise, which is affecting the lives of the ordinary citizens.
