An alleged cattle thief was seriously beaten up by villagers near Adugre after he was caught by them this morning. The beating received by the thief was so severe that he succumbed to his injuries while on being taken to hospital.
The incident took place early this morning in the village of Adugre, under Betasing Police Station, in South West Garo Hills.
According to sources, police received information that one cattle thief was caught by villagers but on reaching the spot they found a person lying seriously injured on the ground.
He was immediately taken to hospital but doctors there declared him dead on arrival.
The victim has been identified as Manik Lal (49), a resident of Chengurchar, in the South Salmara district of Assam.
Lal had apparently been caught by the villagers with three stolen cattle from nearby Rongsang Ajirigri village after which he was thrashed and the cattle recovered.
An inquest and autopsy was conducted on the body and the matter has been taken up for investigation by police.
