It would have been prudent to suspend the police officers involved in August’s killing of ex-militant Cherishterfield Thangkhiew, opposition legislator Himalaya Shangpliang said today.
“I have supported this issue (of justice for Thangkhiew and the police’s suspension) and I have spoken about this in the house and was the first one to join the signature campaign. I stand by what I said from day one and that is that administrative prudence should prevail in the matter,” he told Highland Post.
Allowing the officers to remain in their posts while the inquiry into their actions is ongoing would taint the process in the eyes of the public, the Mawsynram MLA opined.
“There could have been some mistake, flaws or excess but, until the inquiry is conducted, the government should have taken some disciplinary action against those erring officials,” Shangpliang said. “Why are the officers still allowed to roam around? How will the investigation be transparent? The officers involved may tamper with the evidence.”
