Dr Mukul Sangma will not quit the Congress, as his love for the party is too great, state Congress working president Ampareen Lyngdoh told Highland Post today.
The comment comes in reaction to growing speculation that the ex-Chief Minister and still leader of the opposition Dr Sangma could split from the Congress and carry a good deal of Garo Hills MLAs with him.
This view was bolstered after Dr Sangma and the party MLAs from the western range skipped two separate Congress functions last week.
Also speaking to HP, Shillong MP and Meghalaya Congress president Vincent Pala said, “I have nothing much to comment on the absence of Dr Mukul Sangma because I have just taken over as the president of the state Congress on Saturday. I think that the absence of Dr Mukul Sangma has nothing to do with me because I never have any problem with anyone in my entire career and I am always ready to work with anyone at any level.”
Lyngdoh, meanwhile, said, “We are segregating legislative affairs and party affairs and the new team has come to cater to the party affairs whereas Dr Mukul continues to be our CLP leader.”
Refusing to comment on the speculation that Congress is heading for a split, she said, “Dr Mukul is a senior party man and the CLP leader of the party and I will not listen to any rumour because I believe they are all false because his love for the party is very deep.”
