The United Democratic Forum (UDF), a coalition of opposition MDCs in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), has been rechristened as the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) after Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah representative Pynshngain N Syiem rejoined the party last week.
The former Chief Executive Member won his seat in 2019 on a National People’s Party ticket but fell out and sat as an independent.
Syiem then formed a coalition with the opposition Congress, which was dubbed the UDF but this nomenclature has now been dispensed with following his return to the party. The CPP continues to be led by Lamphrang Blah, the Mawphlang MDC.
The Congress now has nine MDCs in the council. This number, though, may rise as Mairang MDC Batskhem Ryntathiang, who had quit the Congress in favour of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party in August last year, may reconsider his decision to defect.
