The inordinate delay in the appointment of a new chairperson to the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW), as well as a new Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), is down to the disruption brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today.
There has been criticism from several quarters over the slowness in appointing a new chairperson of the MSCW, which has gone without one since October last year.
However, the process has to follow certain procedures that have been laid down and unfortunately Covid has gotten in the way, Sangma said, further explaining that this process involves receiving and screening applications. Whether this explanation will satisfy detractors for the 11-month wait is unlikely, though.
At any rate, the matter has now reached the Social Welfare Minister.
Meanwhile, on the issue of appointing a new CIC after the term of the incumbent, Barkos Warjri, ended in March, the CM informed that the process for choosing his replacement has also been delayed by the pandemic.
