If they are so desperate for power, Congress Party politicians should join the BJP because the grand old party will never again hold the reins, BJP national council member Bashailang Khongwir said today.
In a statement, Khongwir accused new Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee president, Vincent Pala MP, and the opposition party of opportunistic politics.
Pala’s recent appointment by Congress headquarters as the new state president has caused internal divisions within the party, Khongwir added.
More sinisterly, and almost as if he was revelling in the rot in the country’s political system, he also recalled the last Manipur election where the Congress could not form the government even though it was just short of a majority. “What chance do they have in Meghalaya? The BJP will ensure no Congress government is formed here,” Khongwir stated.
The Congress has repeatedly attacked the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, of which the BJP is a part, of ruining the financial health of the state and of massive corruption.
Khongwir sought to defend the government, however, by blaming the poor state of finances on the Congress, which had ruled Meghalaya for years prior to 2018.
“The MDA government is now clearing the financial mess in Meghalaya left behind by the previous Congress government. Despite two years of Covid crisis, the MDA government has made considerable financial corrections and is dealing ably with the financial crunch that was further deepened by the global pandemic,” he said, adding that the BJP-led central government has also been a boon for the state.
