The Siju unit of the Garo Students Union has written of its opposition to the construction of a dam for the Baghmara Greater Water Supply Scheme as the pressure group believes it will have an adverse effect on the Siju-Rongdong areas.
Although the scheme would bring development to the local area, provide water for the public’s daily needs and increase the living standard of the people, the GSU opined that it would also a fish sanctuary that is located near the proposed site of the dam. Additionally, there are only two streams that feed the Rongdong waterfall and these are the only source of water for people in the neighbourhood during the dry season.
The GSU proposed, instead, that the dam’s location be moved downstream of the falls to avoid negative environmental consequences.
