A conglomeration of pressure groups and civil society organisations of Mawlai under the aegis of Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai has reiterated their demand for the suspension of police officials who were involved in the raid and, ultimately, the death of ex-HNLC leader Cherishterfield Thangkhiew on August 13.
Today witnessed a public meeting in Mawlai where speakers condemned the state government for not immediately suspending the police officers.
Later, those present burned the effigies of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Director General of Police R Chandranathan, East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa and East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Shailendra Bamaniyan.
Member of Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai and president of the Hynñiewtrep Youths Council’s Mawlai circle, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh, said that they will stand united in their campaign for justice.
On the resignation of Rymbui, Kharlyngdoh dubbed it a drama. Though Rymbui had submitted a letter of resignation on August 15, it was not accepted by the CM. Rymbui had stated in his resignation letter that he had not been aware of the police raid on Thangkhiew’s residence.
Kharlyngdoh also accused Sangma of double standards for not taking action against the police officials even though he had demanded the suspension of police officers following another incident in 2017 when he was an MP.
Meanwhile, Ka Sur Ki Nong Mawlai will also launch a signature campaign on August 27 in Mawlai to press for the suspension of the police officers involved in the Thangkhiew raid.
