The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) now wants an official resolution to be passed in the upcoming Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on amendment to Para 12A (b) in the Sixth Schedule.
The party has been raising this demand since 2019 wherein the word “President” could be replaced with “Governor” in the paragraph.
Speaking to reporters after the central executive committee meeting today, HSPDP president KP Pangniang said that they have decided to write to the MDA government on the proposal.
“We will write to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma because we want an official resolution on this matter in the coming Assembly session,” he said, adding, the replace word will empower the State government to legislate and to do away with central laws that do not apply in Sixth Schedule areas of the state.
“There are central laws that do not suit the culture and customary practices of the people of the State and it takes too much time and a lengthy process to convince the Parliament and to reach the President to get certain approval. So this amendment will simplify things and bring about the much-needed hope for the people of the State,” cabinet minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar said.
He also informed that the HSPDP has been pursuing this matter since 2019 and had also sent a memorandum to Union Home minister Amit Shah during his visit to the State.
