Several ministers, MLAs and MDCs in the State have received extortion notices from the HNLC.
According to police sources, a number of politicians received text messages on their mobile phones from the militant organisation demanding Rs 10 lakh and above as “income tax”.
It was also learnt that the extortion notices were sent through SMSes or Whatsapp.
Sources also said that police have received credible inputs about the extortion notices served to ministers, MLAs and MDCs and the matter is under investigation.
Similarly, several businessmen have also received extortion notices on their mobile phones.
Police sources said that the inputs regarding the extortion drive by HNLC were received during investigation of the recent IED blasts that took place at Khliehriat and Laitumkhrah.
Police believed the blasts were carried out as an attempt to create fear so that those who received the extortion notices complied with the demand.
At least two persons, including a woman, were injured in an improvised explosive device blast by insurgents, which went off behind Laitumkhrah market here on August 10.
In an email to media outlets, the outlawed HNLC had claimed responsibility for the explosion.
Last month, the organisation had carried out another IED attack near the residential quarters of the reserve police force personnel in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills.
Earlier this year, the HNLC had also conducted an attack inside a cement plant in the district.
