The Urban Affairs Department in West Garo Hills district has assured residents of Tura to clear garbage spill from the landfill into a cemetery there.
The assurance was given to the Garo Students Union (GSU), Rongkhon Songgital Youth Environment Committee, cemetery committee and elders of the town during a joint inspection conducted at the Rongkhon Songgital dumping ground today.
GSU publicity secretary, Chegan N Marak said that the assured them that a retaining wall will also be constructed and works will begin from tomorrow.
The organisations had given 12 days deadline and threatened to lock the dumping ground and asked authorities to take action and solve the problem of the municipal landfill because some of its waste has been spilling over into a nearby cemetery and Ringrey stream. They said the unscientific and unhygienic disposal of waste and garbage at the dumping ground is leading to devastating environmental pollution.
