The Hynñiewtrep Youths Council (HYC) has backed the appointment of Idashisha Nongrang as the next Director General of Police, months before the vacancy in the post comes up, and has categorically demanded that no outside police officer be considered for the role.
In a letter to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, which was also shared with the media, the HYC said that the current DGP, R Chandranathan, is scheduled to retire from the force in December. His tenure as DGP is also set to end in November.
The senior-most officer in the Meghalaya Police is Nongrang, the HYC added, a 1992 batch officer who is currently an Additional DGP.
In previous years, Meghalaya governments have favoured police officers from outside the state’s cadre as DGP, the HYC claimed, but this time around there should be no deviation away from Nongrang, who would be the first female DGP in the state’s history.
According to the pressure group, she is a “deserving candidate” with an admirable service record. The HYC also harped on about the matrilineal customs of Meghalaya’s indigenous communities and how this would make her appointment apropos.
