The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has asked the state government to consider relaxing the age limit for those seeking government jobs.
In a letter to the Chief Minister today, HITO said that job opportunities in Meghalaya are scarce and aspirants would be encouraged to apply for state jobs if the age limits were relaxed.
The pressure group referenced a move in 2014 by Karnataka to permit Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe aspirants to apply up to the age of 42.
In March, however, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had poured cold water on a proposal to increase the age limit put forward by North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum, saying that such a move would discourage younger aspirants who have just graduated. It would also be impractical for police posts and those in the junior grades of the civil service, he had said, as there are physical requirements in these jobs as well.
