The choice of leadership within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government lies with the coalition allies and not the opposition Congress Party, cabinet minister AL Hek said today in a rebuff to leader of the opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma.
“To change the leader of the MDA it will be the prerogative of the alliance partners and not of the opposition Congress,” Hek stated.
Dr Sangma had recently said that the MDA constituents must change the coalition’s leadership if they want to protect the interests of the state and its people.
“I cannot tell the Congress Party that they have to change their president. That is their responsibility. I saw reports of the rumblings in the Congress on the issue of the president, but why should I interfere? It is for them to decide on their own. The same thing applies with the MDA alliance – it is our duty to decide,” Hek said. “We are working together and I don’t see any differences under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.”
