AL Hek, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s lone minister in the Meghalaya cabinet, today reiterated that he would not shy away from the party leadership if called on to take the reins.
“I will not shy away from taking the responsibility. The entire thing depends on the national leadership of the party,” Hek told reporters.
BJP state president Ernest Mawrie has become a polarising figure in the saffron outfit, though Hek still said today that the former is working for the party, though there are some issues that need collective decision-making while other issues can be decided by the president alone.
“I have seen reports of many senior leaders having resigned from their posts but are still in the party. They are not happy with the style of functioning of the state president,” he added.
The minister also said that it is high time that the BJP met to discuss the issue out in the open.
Looking at the broader picture, Hek also said that given the Hindu nationalist party’s performance in the entire country, there should be no reason that Meghalaya cannot have a BJP-led government.
He indicated that there are a few MLAs and other politicians who are willing to join the party but that the Covid-19 situation has prevented them from doing so because “people don’t want to make politics during the pandemic”.
