The Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh here has decided to return the fortified rice after finding that the rice was of sub-standard quality.
According to Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh general secretary, Marbud Dkhar, the rice was received yesterday and its poor quality was detected following complaints by beneficiaries in the locality.
“We have asked the recipients of this fortified rice not to consume it as it may pose danger to their health,” Dkhar said adding, “It may also have plastic contents.”
While expressing concern over supply of poor quality fortified rice to the beneficiaries, Dkhar also demanded an inquiry by the Food and Civil Supplies Department and Social Welfare Department into the matter.
He said that fortified rice should be properly tested before supplying it to people so that children and pregnant mothers should not face health risk by consuming such rice.
“If animals are given good quality feed why humans should be given such a poor quality food item,” Dkhar asked.
