Cabinet minister and BJP legislator, AL Hek, today said that he is ready and willing to lead the Bharatiya Janata Party if the central leadership calls on him to do so.
He said this while adding that there is no move afoot to remove the incumbent state party president, Ernest Mawrie.
“As a Karyakarta, if they give me (the post of president) I have no problem,” Hek told reporters. “There are so many leaders in the BJP, not only AL Hek. Others are also there, so we leave it to the wisdom and decision of the national leaders to see who is the best to lead the BJP in Meghalaya.”
When asked if the central leadership of the party has decided to remove Mawrie, Hek said that his ouster now depends on the state unit and the central leadership of the BJP.
There have been reports that party workers are sending strong signals for Hek to succeed Mawrie as the state party president. Many workers, including the saffron party’s other MLA, Sanbor Shullai, have expressed frustration with Mawrie.
Meanwhile, Hek also informed that neither the BJP nor the government has received any intimation from the office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah about his proposed visit to the state. The state government is keen to meet him to press for the Inner Line Permit.
