The government will ensure that any investigation into the accusation of rape made against sitting North Tura legislator Thomas A Sangma is done according to the law, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today.
On June 1 Thomas, who is a member of Conrad’s National People’s Party (NPP) and was formerly a Rajya Sabha MP, was accused in an FIR by a woman of multiple instances of rape against her on the promise of marriage.
Today, Conrad said that the complaint filed by the woman against the MLA was a personal matter and, therefore, should not be commented on by the government.
“I don’t feel it appropriate that we as a government should respond to it. It’s something that has happened at an individual level and from our side and as a government the only thing we ensure and assure is that law will take its own course,” the CM told reporters. “We will ensure that the truth comes out with proper investigation and that there is no influence and no pressure from anywhere to affect the investigation process.”
Yesterday, opposition MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh demanded that Thomas be stripped of his appointment to Assembly committees as had been done with former Mawhati MLA Julius Dorphang was accused of child rape in 2017.
On this, the Chief Minister said it would be unfair to make hasty decisions.
“It would be appropriate for us to ensure that we are fair to everybody in this (matter) and that includes both people concerned,” he stated.
Only after a proper investigation to uncover the facts will the government take appropriate action, Conrad added.
