The state government today announced that it will go ahead with the construction of prefabricated coronavirus facilities despite reportedly being advised not to by the Health Minister.
“The government has already decided to create Corona health facilities through pre-fab structures considering the urgency and challenges of the State,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said.
The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has provided Meghalaya with Rs 6.7 crore for constructing these 100-bed facilities in Shillong and Tura.
Health Minister AL Hek had reportedly advised the government not to go ahead with the proposal to construct two prefab hospitals.
“I have spoken about this on many occasions. I am of the view that the funds for constructing the two prefab hospitals should be used to strengthen the existing healthcare infrastructure,” he had said.
According to him, the prefab hospitals that will be constructed in open spaces will ultimately have to be demolished.
